Follow the Child
The Montessori classroom (Casa Dei Bambini/Children's House) is a prepared environment, an 'aid to life', designed to meet the needs of each child as an individual. The classroom is filled with a variety of aesthetically pleasing, multi-sensory, sequential materials designed to help the child learn how to learn and how to think. The child begins by making a choice and by working at their own pace. Through repetition, they begin to develop a sense of order, concentration, coordination and independence - the foundation for future learning in other areas of the classroom.
There are four main areas of the classroom: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language and Math. Other areas may include
-
Science: exploration and experimentation in both the natural and physical sciences.
-
Geography: investigating and understanding the earth and its features.
-
Cultural Studies: respecting our similarities and differences.
-
Spanish: exploring the language and customs of another country.
-
Art and Music: releasing the child's creative spirit.
-
Physical Outdoor Play: promoting large motor development
-
Yoga: instructed yoga.
The teacher facilitates learning by observation, incidental assistance, general guidance, and direct instruction. The result - the joy of learning and a confident, independent child!
